Our ten organizations are each unique and in many cases are very different from one another. But there are a few things we have discovered about one another during the process of establishing the Network.
The Playwrights' Development Centres are unique and important because:
- We are essential to the development of Playwrights
- We have a unique focus on the text and the writer
- We are an important resource, partner, and ally to producing companies
- We are the first line of discovery of new voices
What the Playwrights' Development Centres have in common:
- We are advocates for the playwright's work
- Our goal is to support, encourage, and champion the plays and playwrights we work with
- We are non-producing, and generally independent of particular producing theatre companies
- We work to create a link between the play and a staged production
- We are advocates for the plays and writers we work with
- Our role is part of a process, beginning with the blank page and moving to the production on stage
Our Focus is on the Playwright
- Playwrights' Development Centres serve playwrights; we are concerned with developing each script to its fullest potential
- We provide resources and advice to playwrights at all stages of their careers – emerging, beginning, and senior
- We offer training and professional development assistance
- We seek to identify talent; the work itself is more important than the playwright's resume or previous experience
- Our work is process-oriented and devoted to the needs of writers and their work
